Assist to Lower Alsace on structure fire

On January 29, just before 5:30a.m. Mt. Penn was dispatched along with Exeter (Co25)to assist Lower Alsace (Co4) at 2160 Highland Ave. for a reported structure fire, fire in the kitchen.  Deputy 1 (Wertz) arrived first and confirmed a working fire which was already venting out of the door and windows.  Deputy 4-1 (Mountz) arrived soon after and assumed command of the incident while having Birdsboro (Co7) dispatched for RIT.  Hydrants on Highland Ave. proved difficult to access and a line was laid up from a hydrant at S. 22nd St and Fairview Ave.  Fire had quickly extended from the kitchen area throughout the structure causing collapses of the rear roof and interior ceilings.  Crews had plenty of hard work to find and extinguish all of the fire, especially above the ceiling area and Deputy 4-1 struck a second alarm to bring more personnel to the scene to relieve the initial crews and assist with final extinguishment and overhaul.  Fortunately all the occupants of the home made it out safely.  All crews were released shortly after 9:00a.m.  The fire remains under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s office.
