Mt. Penn Fire Company

Assist to Reading City

On December 19 shortly before 9a.m. Engine 1 was dispatched on the second alarm to assist Reading City at 1103 Spruce St. with a working fire.  City units arrived with heavy fire from the first floor and in the process of fighting the fire and searching the vacant structure a firefighter went through the second floor.  A mayday was sounded and he was quickly removed by fellow firefighters.  Several others also went through the floor but were able to easily extricate themselves.  Unfortunately a civilian was found deceased during the search of the first floor.  The E1 crew assisted with ventilation and overhaul then was placed in service as the RIT company.  County units were able to begin clearing the scene by 10a.m.  This fire remains under investigation.
