Mt. Penn Fire Company

Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

thanksgiving

As Thanksgiving Day approaches the members of the Mt. Penn Fire Company would like to wish you all HAPPY THANKSGIVING!  We ask that you please be safe if you are going to travel as well as be safe if you are going to stay home with family and friends.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (nfpa.org), Thanksgiving Day is the #1 day for home cooking fires with unattended cooking being the leading contributing factor.  Cooking equipment is the leading cause of home structure fires and associated civilian injuries.  Some further safety tips from the NFPA:

  • Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently.
  • Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids should stay 3 feet away.
  • Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns.
  • Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags.
  • Keep knives out of the reach of children.
  • Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child.
  • Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet.
  • Never leave children alone in room with a lit candle.
  • Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button.

If you are going to travel, please be safe on the roads.  This is the peak time of year for vehicle collisions with deer.  Additionally there are many more vehicles on the roadways and limited hours of daylight.  Weather may also be a factor, depending on where you are travelling to.  Please take your time, be courteous to other drivers and ARRIVE ALIVE!  We hope that you enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday!
