Mt. Penn Fire Company

Just about June

It’s been a busy few days here as we wrap up May and get ready to move into June.

On May 30 shortly after 8p.m. the ladder was sent to cover Western Berks Fire Station 2 while they were operating at a 2nd alarm structure fire on Water Rd. in Lower Heidelberg Twp.  While on standby L1 covered 2 medical assists in South Heidelberg Twp. where the EMS crew had requested them for lifting.  Ladder 1 cleared the standby and returned to station shortly before midnight.

Shortly before noon on May 31 the ladder and engine were dispatched along with several other companies to assist Exeter (Co25) on a reported structure fire at 16 Windsor Ct. in the Wingspread development.  The first crews on location reported a working dryer fire and stretched a line.  The ladder crew was detailed to search and ventilate the structure.  Crews were able to quickly knock the fire down and prevent it from spreading but the high humidity conditions required several fans to remove all the smoke from the structure.  Mt. Penn was able to clear by 12:30p.m.

After clearing Exeter Twp. Ladder 1 met with Engine 4(Lower Alsace) and proceeded to the 3rd & Court St. station to join with the Reading Fire Department as they prepared for FF/EMT Erik Hirner’s final ride through the city he served so well over the past 11 years.  Erik passed away from injuries suffered in a crash last week as he was on his way to work.  While awaiting the procession L1 was sent to 702 N. 8th St. to assist Engine 9(RFD) on a fire alarm.  Fortunately it was steam from cooking and the units were cleared quickly.  L1 and E4 proceeded to 3rd & Buttonwood Sts. to join with Tower 25(Exeter) as well as Reading E1 and a medic unit to await the procession.  A final salute was rendered as the procession passed by.  Rest in Peace Erik…..you will be greatly missed by all!
