On November 10 about 10:45a.m. the rescue truck was dispatched to assist Lower Alsace (Co4) in the area of Antietam Rd. & Lewis Rd. for a vehicle crash with unknown injuries. On arrival crews found a small SUV that had struck the guard rail and then went over the embankment, coming to rest at the shoreline of Antietam Lake. Fortunately the driver was able to get out and up the embankment on their own and escaped injury.
On arrival, crews went to the vehicle to assess the best course of action and discovered it was leaking fuel into the ground and lake. Assistant 4 (Mountz) called for the HazMat trailer from Mt. Penn to respond in order to contain the fuel and other fluids. Containment booms and absorbent pads were placed while the towing company prepared to recover the vehicle. Once the vehicle was removed the crews placed additional pads and oil dry to the affected area as well as on Antietam Rd. to prevent further run-off due to expected rain. Crews remained on the scene for approximately 90 minutes before returning to station.
