Cumru Brush Fire

On March 21st shortly before 5p.m. Mt. Penn was dispatched along with Reading City and other companies to a reported brush fire near Klapperthal Junction in Cumru Twp. Some units went out S. 9th St. to make access from the city side while other units went to Poplar Neck Rd. near the old Titus Station. Arriving units found a working brush fire about an acre in size along the Norfolk Southern tracks right at the junction. It was knocked down within 20 minutes but crews spent the next hour doing overhaul due to sloppy housekeeping by the railroad. Old rails and ties that had been removed were dumped along the right of way and proved difficult to fully extinguish but plenty of water and class A foam got the job done. Units were able to begin clearing the scene by 6:30p.m.
