Double Structure Fires Hours Apart

On February 15th just before 10:30p.m. Mt. Penn, along with several other companies, was dispatched to Jake’s Coin Laundry at 747 Carsonia Ave. in the township for a reported structure fire. EMS, having their station just behind this location quickly called a working fire reporting smoke showing and 2 dryers inside well involved. Arriving units pulled 2 lines and made access to the roof to open a ventilation hole where fire was showing. The fire was knocked down in less than 20 minutes but crews had to perform extensive overhaul as it had extended to part of the structure as well as ductwork which was removed out into the parking lot. Crews were able begin clearing the scene shortly before 1a.m. This fire was found to be caused by excessive lint buildup in the dryer vent system.
The second structure fire came in shortly before 5:30a.m. for the 700 block of Hall Ave. in Exeter Township when Mt. Penn was dispatched as the RIT company for a possible structure fire. First arriving units quickly confirmed a working fire in a modular home with it being burned to the ground. Ladder 1 was added to the call shortly after to cover for another unit. The crews from the rescue and the ladder went to work assisting with pulling apart burning materials so they could be extinguished. Multiple tankers were called to provide water in this area which had no nearby hydrants. Fortunately the residents safely escaped but the home was a total loss. Units were able to begin clearing around 6:30a.m. although others remained on scene well into mid-morning. The cause of this fire is under investigation by the township and State Police Fire Marshal.
