Gas odor marks 500th call

On November 25th just before 9p.m. the ladder and rescue were dispatched to assist Lower Alsace(Co4) at the Reading Liederkranz, 143 Spook Lane for an odor of natural gas.  On arrival several crews metered the building and found no readings of any type.  Further investigation found several outdoor propane heaters stored in the basement of which several had the valves in the open position and the  control knobs in the on position.  This allowed a slow release of gas which caused the odor.  Crews opened several basement doors which allowed the fumes to dissipate within 10 minutes.  Liederkranz staff then removed the heaters to an outdoor storage area.

On a side note, this response also marked our 500th call for the year.  This represents the highest amount of calls Mt. Penn has had…..EVER!  Several older members will remember it was a big deal when we did 100 or 125 calls per year.  We still have a bit more than a month to go in 2018 so what the final amount will be is still to be determined. We are extremely grateful for all of our supporters and members who have kept things running throughout the year!
