It was a pretty busy weekend at Mt. Penn with numerous calls for trees on wires, a few brush fires, a few structure fire calls as well as several medical assists. As we rapidly approach Thanksgiving and the real start of the holiday season, we hope you take time out from the retail madness and general craziness of the world to be thankful for everything you have.
Just like everybody else we would like to be able to take a break, but we will always respond when called. With that in mind, there are a few things that can make the holidays safer for everybody.
Don’t leave cooking unattended in the kitchen. Cooking and kitchen fires are among the leading causes of fires in the home.
Don’t drink and drive! DUH! We have often repeated this over the years, but it bears repeating over and over and over. Nobody wants to come to see you in the hospital or worse because you had a few too many before you hit another vehicle or a pole. There are also HUGE penalties and fines, typically $10,000 or more which can really put a damper on your holiday spirit!
It gets dark pretty early these days and that will continue through the next few months. Turn on your headlights! If you have trouble seeing others on the road then they are having trouble seeing you.
Bad weather could happen at any time. If your wipers are on, your headlights, not daytime running lights, need to be on. Clear ALL snow and ice from your vehicle so you have unobstructed visibility and nothing comes loose and flies off your vehicle.
Remember to steer clear of emergency vehicles along the roads. This includes tow trucks as well as police, fire and EMS vehicles. Many emergency responders are injured or killed every year because drivers are not paying attention to what is going on around them. If you can’t move over you need to slow down until you are past the scene. It’s the law!
