On February 8 just before 10a.m. Mt. Penn was requested to respond with the spill trailer to 6867 Boyertown Pike in Amity Township to assist with a tractor trailer crash that was leaking fuel. First arriving units had a tractor trailer tanker fully loaded with diesel fuel which was free flowing from several holes in the tank. The driver was rescued by nearby workers from Chuck’s Auto Salvage and quickly transported to the hospital by EMS. Crews from Amity(Co49), Monocacy(Co6), Exeter(Co25) and Mt. Penn did as much as they could to control and contain the spill until the arrival of the Berks County Haz-Mat Team. Once they assessed the situation wooden plugs and sealing putty were used to stop the fuel spill and a containment pool was placed to catch any further spill. Mt. Penn units were able to clear shortly before noon although other fire units as well as Met-Ed, Berks-Mont towing, V&M towing and Lewis Environmental remained on scene until well into the evening getting the truck removed, repairing poles & wires and finishing fuel clean up. The crash remains under investigation by Amity Township Police.
