20 years ago today this country was shocked by the actions of terrorists who attacked on our own soil in New York City, Arlington, Virginia and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Thousands lost their lives and many more thousands were injured. First responders, especially in New York City, suffered terrible losses while trying to save others. In the days that followed we came together as one people and one nation. In the months and years to follow our military would carry out their job and bring those responsible to justice for these terrible acts.
It is hard to describe the feeling of sitting in our station the next few nights and working out a plan to send an engine and 5 people to be deployed wherever we were asked to go but that planning is what happened at emergency service locations all around the Northeast. Fortunately we never got that call but we were ready as were countless others around the region. Other offers of aid came from our allies all around the globe and the world stood as one against terrorism.
This September 11th is special being the 20th anniversary but every September 11th should be special for ALL Americans! Take a few moments to reflect, pray and offer thanks for those that have stood fast in the face of danger while doing their “job”. Thank a vet, firefighter, soldier, police officer, EMT or paramedic for doing what they do and keeping others safe. Fly that flag and be proud to be an AMERICAN!
